Local MP Nick Ainger believes the arrival of LNG is potentially the biggest boost to West Wales since the first refinery opened nearly 50 years ago.

Speaking from his Pembroke Dock office, Mr Ainger said: "LNG has transformed the future of the West Wales energy industry after over 20 years of contraction. A major new chapter has begun for our economy.

"The two new terminals can supply up to 30 per cent of the UK's gas needs. With North Sea Gas declining and fears over the security of supplies from Russia, gas imported through Milford Haven into the national grid is a huge boost to our energy supply and security for the whole of the UK.

"The new gas-fired power station at Pembroke will begin construction next month, creating up to 2000 construction jobs. This new gas supply can also be used in combined heat and power plants on the terminals and refineries, using gas efficiently and cutting emissions.

"West Wales will become the UK's energy capital, supplying up to 30 per cent of its gas, 20 per cent of its petrol and diesel and an important amount of its electricity.

"Renewable energy is growing, too, with wind, wave and tidal projects being developed.

"Hundreds of permanent jobs are being created to run and maintain the new projects. Apprentices are already being recruited and local firms are winning contracts for support and maintenance packages.

"The recession is hitting the UK, but in West Wales there are new real opportunities which will help us through the downturn."
