A 17-YEAR-OLD student has won a top scholarship award in recognition of the outstanding contribution he has made to the Urdd Eisteddfod.

The Urdd Eisteddfod scholarship was presented to Steffan Messenger, of 72 Millfields Close, Pentlepoir, after he won a haul of medals and trophies at the event held this year in Anglesey.

Head boy at Ysgol y Preseli, Crymych, Steffan won a total of 11 medals, including five firsts, as well as four special trophies for competitions in poetry, prose, music composition and drama.

Currently studying for his A levels in Welsh, English, Spanish and geography, he was presented with the £570 scholarship on Saturday at the Bryn Terfel scholarship concert in Bangor.

A fluent Welsh speaker, Steffan is the son of Robert and Menna Messenger, and tomorrow (Saturday) will be accompanying five school friends to Lesotho to work on a project to build toilets for a small village.
