At a service of dedication, held on Saturday at Llanteg Village Hall, a cross-stitch memorial to the three war dead of Crunwere parish was unveiled by Mrs. Eileen Oriel (widow of John Mason, who is recorded on the memorial) and dedicated by Rev. Dylan Bate.

This memorial had been the idea of Llanteg History Society. Following an appeal in the Village Newsletter, Mrs. Diana John, of Ruelwall, kindly came forward and volunteered to undertake the design, as well as embroider the cross-stitch lettering, which is surrounded by an appropriate border of poppies and forget-me-nots.

The History Society is indebted to Mrs. John for giving freely of both her time and labour in producing this beautiful work.

The memorial records three war dead - Private William Davies (who died at Passchendaele on October 9, 1917, aged 35), Private Hugh Slader Glanville (who died of wounds on November 11, 1917, after the Battle of Gaza, aged 20) and Stoker James Edgar John Mason (who was lost overboard from his landing barge on June 14, 1944, during the Normandy invasions, aged 22).

Despite the previous bad weather, a large crowd of relatives and friends gathered for the moving service, which was followed by a tea prepared by members of the History Society.

Mrs. John was presented with a bouquet of flowers as a token of appreciation.

The memorial will now hang in Llanteg Village Hall as a permanent reminder of the brave men of our parish who lost their lives so long ago.
