Living by the sea is a project commissioned by the Port of Milford Haven, as part of the National Seafarers Awareness campaign.

Co-ordinated by Pembrokeshire Coastal Forum and facilitated by Spacetocreate Community Arts, the multi-media exhibition was designed to raise awareness of Britain's dependence on seafarers.

During the autumn of 2013, 12 AS-Level photography students studying at Milford Haven School attended an introductory sessions in school which provided opportunities to explore visual culture, photography as an art form, critical skills and media literacy as well as setting up and learning how to use the cameras for studio portraits, the production of exhibition quality prints, the use of digital sound recording equipment and interviewing skills.

The students then took part in studio sessions at Milford Haven Docks, where the crew of 15 seafarers where photographed and interviewed. The final session provided an opportunity for the students to select the best images to be used in the exhibition. During October half-term, the exhibition can be found at Milford Haven Museum, and then in the New Year, The National Waterfront Museum, Swansea.

Jodie McGregor, PCF engagement coordinator commented: "Our thanks go out to all who made the project a success, including the varied crew of 15 seafarers, Port of Milford Haven staff, Pembrokeshire Coastal Forum, Spacetocreate Community Arts, the art department at Milford Haven School, and finally, the students who created such a great body of art."
