Sir,
About 18 months ago I wrote to you after visiting Tenby to stay with relatives for the New Year. In my letter I wrote of my concern at the poor state of the town.
I have just recently returned home after another six weeks stay and I am afraid to say it appears that little has changed. The beaches, although not dirty, seem to be uncared for. Perhaps you should take a leaf from Bournmouth's books - they clean their beaches every day.
Traffic is horrendous, mainly due to people parking on double yellow lines with no thought to other drivers and pedestrians. It would seem that people think if they leave their hazard warning lights on or park up on the pavement, it's OK. Where are the traffic wardens? Where are the local bobbies? It's human nature that people will carry on doing it if they can get away with it.
Litter is strewn everywhere, even feet away from bins. I blame visitors for the most part; they have no pride in their own towns, so it's hardly surprising they would have no pride in keeping Tenby clean.
We saw many a dog being walked on parts of the beaches which they are banned from. This is not fair to visitors and locals alike.
But by far the problem which incensed me the most are the gangs of people who flood the town at weekends for hen and stag parties. They roam the streets drinking from bottles, shouting and bawling obscenities and urinating against walls and even in shop doorways. The schools were on holiday, so many families were in the town. Do you think they would want to return after seeing that kind of behaviour? I don't think so.
I urge both Tenby and Pembrokeshire councils once again, please, please get your act together and do something about it. I spoke to many local people who I know feel the same way.
To end on a positive note, the two best things are that Tenby won Wales in Bloom - well deserved as the flowers and especially the gardens were beautiful. Secondly, my uncle (Jim Taylor) is a member of Tenby Male Choir, so I attended quite a few concerts. They are sounding better than ever and can only be classed as superb.
Miss A. M. Tones,
Rossendale,
Lancs.
