The organisation originally approached the town council to see if they would consider storing the buggies at the De Valence. However, the club withdrew their offer after councillors agreed that it would be too difficult for members of the public to access the buggies at points during the summer and over weekends when the council offices were closed.
Speaking at Tuesday night's meeting of the council, when correspondence on the matter again came before members, Mayor, Clr. Mrs. Sue Lane, said she thought the introduction of the buggies would be a "wonderful idea" and she was sorry that the council wouldn't be able to assist with the project, but put a plea out for anyone in a position to help, to contact the Lions Club.
Lions Club secretary, Tony Hickling, said of the proposal: "We envisage that the scheme would operate for the benefit of visitors to the town, be they local or holidaymakers, so as to enable them better to enjoy the beaches and surrounding areas by allowing access to soft areas where they would otherwise be unable to go."
