On a very cold evening, in December, the sound of bagpipes, played by Paul Fifield, was heard in South Parade. This provided a special welcome to a large number of people coming to St. Johns Church, Tenby, for the Ty Hafan Light up a Life Event. The event took the form of a carol service with a variety of musical items, all using local talent, freely given. Mr. Robert Taylor, of Ty Hafan, was present to talk about the wonderful work undertaken at this children's hospice and accepted a welcome donation from the Tenby and Saundersfoot Lions Club. An invitation to the lighting of candles was extended by Rev. Nanette Lewis-Head. This was a very moving part of the service as it provided a time of reflection, and an opportunity to remember loved ones who are no longer with us. At the same time, each child was invited to write a name or a message on a Ty Hafan Star. The stars were then hung on a special tree. A collection for Ty Hafan was taken up during the last carol. Following the service, coffee and mince pies were served in the hall. The organisers wish to thank everyone who took part. Tenby Junior School Choir for two beautiful Christmas pieces; the talented young people from Ysgol Preseli who comprise Pedwarawd (String Quartet); St. Mary's Handbell Ringers for their usual polished performance; Connor, Rachel and Lara for expertly delivering their readings; St. Johns Music Group for the excellent introduction; all the accompanists; and Paul, for braving the elements to play everyone in! It is intended to make the Light up a Life service an annual event. It costs over £2.5 million every year to run Ty Hafan.
