Pictured in the recording studio at the Innovation Centre, Pembrokeshire College, is LATCH representative, Dave Gravell, receiving a cheque for £503. Also in the photograph are National Diploma Music Technology students Tony Brand from Dale and Andrew Stevens from Pembroke, lecturers Jim Outram and James Ramage and entrepreneur champion Nick James. Missing is one of the student organisers, Matthew Lyons from St. Davids.
The college music technology students raised over £700 by recording, producing and selling 100 CDs called Lift the Latch, as well as selling 138 tickets to a launch gig they organised at the Merlin Theatre with the same musicians.
Money needed to start the venture was borrowed from the KEF entrepreneurship fund to finance both the CD and gig. Costs were then paid back from the generated sales revenue.
Latch will use the money to play a supporting role of the medical unit in the new children's hospital in Cardiff.
Whilst the Noah's Ark Appeal has raised money for the building and equipment of the wards, Latch will help fund parental support such as accommodation during a child's stay at the hospital, transport, holidays, and help overcoming bereavement.
Student Tony Brand has a place to study drumming at the University of Brighton in September, while Andrew Stevens is going to take a year out.
