Lifeguards will be on duty on Saundersfoot beach this summer, Pembrokeshire County Council has confirmed.

The announcement follows what the council says was a 'misleading report' on BBC Radio Wales news last week.

The report claimed that the authority had refused to allocate lifeguards to the Blue Flag beach despite the comments of a coroner at an inquest into the drowning of a young boy last year.

County council cabinet member Clr. Brian Howells said that the radio report had given the wrong impression.

"I was interviewed for the news item and made it clear that although no final decision had been taken, it was quite probable that lifeguards would be allocated to Saundersfoot," explained Clr. Howells, whose cabinet responsibilities include leisure.

"This was certainly not reflected in the headline to the report."

Clr. Howells added that the question of lifeguards could not be resolved until the council completed an annual risk assessment of its award-winning beaches.

"We have now completed that assessment and the decision is to allocate lifeguards to Saundersfoot, even though they are not compulsory on a Blue Flag beach."
