Haverfordwest Golf Club is the latest to receive a lifesaving defibrillator with thanks to match-funding raised by the members of the Golf Club committee and the British Heart Foundation (BHF) Haverfordwest branch, which was possible due to the BHF’s Nation of Lifesaver package which teaches cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) skills and provides public access defibrillators (PADs) where they are needed.
Tim Green, president of the Golf Club, said: “We are delighted that a defibrillator will be located outside the Golf Club main entrance so that it is accessible at all times in the event of an emergency. I would like to thank in particular Tudor Thomas and Keith Tuson for all their help and support in making the application and raising vital funds for this piece of life-saving equipment. The local community will also be trained on Emergency Life Skills, which involves CPR and defibrillator training, in the next few weeks.”
Alan Carrington, chairman of the BHF Haverfodwest Branch, said “The BHF Haverfordwest fundraising branch were delighted to help match-fund this vital piece of equipment in the local community.”
Jayne Lewis, BHF Cymru’s local fundraising manager, added: “I would like to thank the members of the Golf Club and also the Haverfordwest BHF fundraising branch for all their help and support. Today, if you suffer a cardiac arrest out of hospital in the UK, you have less than a one in 10 chance of surviving. We are leading the fight to change this and create a Nation of Lifesavers. We are working to support the placement of lifesaving defibrillators in areas of need within the local community. With more people in Wales trained in emergency life-support skills and more defibrillators available locally, the chances of resuscitating someone from a cardiac arrest should be greatly improved. Having more defibrillators available locally for these emergencies is crucial to saving more lives.”
Heart and circulatory disease is Wales’ single biggest killer. Across Wales thousands of people are already helping the fight for every heart beat as fundraisers and volunteers.
