The third annual 50+ conference took place recently in the Pavilion at Withybush Showground, Haverfordwest, attended by over 100 people. In his introduction, Clr. David Wildman, Pembrokeshire County Council cabinet member and designated older Persons Champion, said that he had been present at the launch of the Welsh Assembly Government's National Service Framework for Older People. He went on: "This framework sets out national standards for both local authorities and the Health Service to ensure that, as we grow older, we are enabled to maintain our health well being and independence for as long as possible and receive prompt seamless quality treatment and support when required. "Your contributions today will help us to plan and develop local services so that we can meet the standards set." Delegates then heard from Dr. Rowan Wilson, consultant psychiatrist at Withybush Hospital, who described the ageing process and the research that showed how they could maximise their chances of a long and healthy retirement. Simon Boex, the Wales Co-ordinator for Better Government for Older People (BGOP), then spoke about the arrangements for involving those over 50 in developing services both locally and at Welsh Assembly Government level. Bernardine Rees, chief executive of the Local Health Board, Fiona Walder, development officer from PAVS, and Colin Cribb, head of community Care Commissioning, Pembrokeshire County Council, all outlined the progress that had been made with the delivery of health and social services, and of the vital role of the voluntary sector. After lunch there was a presentation by volunteers from Ceredigion Theatre Forum, which highlighted some of the problems facing older people as they try to remain independent at home. The day concluded with delegates breaking into groups to discuss a wide range of issues and offer their views on how services should be developed in the future.
