Young Kilgetty footballer Liam Cullen has been signed up to join Swansea City's Centre of Excellence and would love to follow the path taken by another Kilgetty product, George Edwards, in becoming a professional footballer. In recent years, a number of Pembrokeshire footballers, such as Ian Walsh, his nephew Simon Davies and Fishguard's Mark Delaney, have followed that well-trodden path with success and it looks as if the new season will herald the breakthrough year for Joe Allen from Narberth, who made his Swansea City debut at the end of last season. Eight-year-old Liam is a product of the Pembrokeshire Football Coaching Centre and plays as a striker or in midfield. Recently he made his debut for the Swans in a tournament in Watford, where he came up against teams from Tottenham Hotspur, Millwall, Coventry, Southampton, Oxford and Rushden & Diamonds. In the six highly competitive games, Swansea won three, drew two and lost once, with Liam getting on the score-sheet twice. Liam will now travel to Swansea twice a week for training and will travel again on Sundays for matches. Liam is the son of proud parents, Brian and Louise Cullen, and brother to Jodie. In addition to the coaching that he has received with clubs and other organisations, Liam also receives some individual tuition from his grandfather, Graham Jenkins. Graham was a well-known Welsh League and Pembrokeshire footballer in his playing days, with a lethal shot from both feet and he still plays cricket regularly for Kilgetty. Liam is most grateful for the guidance he has received to date from all coaches, especially those at Kilgetty AFC, where he has played since the age of five, and he appreciates the support that he has enjoyed from the staff and his fellow pupils at Stepaside School.
