Sir,
I totally agree with Peter Jenkins's letter of last week. Yes, we do need another supermarket! How dare the powers-that-be tell us we don't! Have they asked us, the consumers? The ones that go to Pembroke Dock to do our main shop? No, they haven't! And it's about time they did. Everybody I've talked to has said they would welcome a supermarket in New Hedges (or even two!) as it would mean they had a choice nearer to home.
Somerfield/Sainsbury's is too small to cope with demand from Easter to October and over the Christmas period too. Tenby town wouldn't really be affected as there are no real food shops anyway. Everyday shopping would still be done there (i.e., bread, milk).
So, to clear the debate between the 'do's' and 'don'ts', let's have a referendum. Two boxes in the De Valence, one marked 'Yes,' one marked 'No,' count the votes (in public please!) and let us know the result. To stop people voting more than once, get a copy of the electoral roll and cross their names off when they have voted. Leave the boxes there for a week (but do let us know what week).
So easy and simple and democratic. And don't forget the employment aspect of all this either - too many people in this town can only work for six months a year in the catering trade; a year-round job would be much better.
P. Greenhorn,
Tenby.
