A group of local fundraisers made waves last week when they took on a lengthy swimming challenge for the charity Level Water.

The group took on the challenge on the evening of Friday, April 6, when they swam 10K (6.2 miles/400 lengths/ 100 x 100m) at the pool at Tenby Leisure Centre to raise money for Level Water who give disabled children the opportunity to learn the vital skill of swimming.

So far, the group has raised £290, which is more than enough to provide one child with swimming lessons for over a year.

Team members were: Pat Currie (captain), Nicky Rees, Stephen Rogers, Matthew Evans, Molly Lewis, Janina Evans, Mark Lester, Damian Arthur, Marco Hernandez, Peter Brace, Joe Bowles, Giffo.

“Pat Currie captained the team, and with a need for an experienced athlete to inspire today, Pat with his 127 years of experience was the natural choice!” said Matthew Evans.

“Star of lane two was Marco Hernandez. He took delivery of his special biscuits 40 minutes into the swim and transformed him into an Olympic endurance athlete.

“Marco then proceeded to break Nicky Rees and myself in the lane with his 80s love songs! A tactical approach to a long day!

“Steve Rogers dominated in lane three with an individual approach to the day. On a rare visit to the south of the county, he used his time efficiently.

“Bathing in the warm waters, at one stage he was rumoured to have had a shave, and finally ‘hoovering’ all the athletes’ nutrition as they left the wall over and over again!” he added.
