Four community learning centres in Pembrokeshire are under threat of closure.

At a meeting of Pembrokeshire County Council's cabinet on Monday, a report from the director for children and schools recommended that the authority cease to operate the Pembroke Dock and Fishguard facilities by August of this year.

In the case of Pembroke Dock, the authority will relocate courses to other community venues, and in particular will make maximum possible use of the Market Hall building, which is 200 yards away from the current centre. In the longer term, the authority will seek to make use of the proposed Pembroke Learning Campus as a centre for delivery.

As part of phase two of the proposals, the authority will cease to maintain centres in Haverfordwest and Tenby from August 2016.

In Tenby, this will have a knock-on effect for the library and the youth centre, which will need to be managed by the relevant council services. Currently, both services plan to maintain their presence in the town.

Learning Pembrokeshire has a significant presence in the Bloomfield Centre in Narberth, and it is likely that that presence will reduce during phase two.

It all stems from Welsh Government funding reductions. Last year, the Learning Pembrokeshire grant was reduced by 25.3 per cent, and last month, local authorities received notification from them that the funding for Basic Skills, ESOL and ICT courses will reduce by £85,600 from April 1 with the likelihood of a further reduction in 2016-17.
