WHEN Tony Ward moved to Pembrokeshire from the Midlands some 20 years ago, his great nephew Luke Copley had not even been born. Little could Tony have imagined how much Luke would one day follow in his footsteps! Tony attended Bishop Vesey Grammar School in Sutton Coldfield from 1942-1948 and exactly 60 years later Luke attended the same establishment until he, too, moved to Pembrokeshire in 2002. Although studying in different centuries, while at the school both Tony and Luke excelled in the unusual topic of Latin. Tony even went on to teach the subject in secondary school in Shropshire. Many years later, when Luke settled in Martletwy, he asked Lawrenny resident, great uncle Tony, if he would dust off the cobwebs from his Latin books and tutor him in the language. Twelve months later at the age of 14, Greenhill School entered Luke for his GCSE exam. Last week, Luke discovered that he had been successful in the exam and is now one of the few Pembrokeshire residents to be the proud holder of a qualification in the ancient language of Latin.

Luke Copley is seen left being congratulated by his great uncle, Tony Ward.
