An overhaul of late-night licences in Tenby is needed in a bid to stop the quality of life of residents suffering, local councillors claimed this week.
The topic arose at Tuesday night's meeting of the town council when members were asked to consider a 'new licence application' for a chip shop located in Upper Frog Street.
The application, for 'Tenby's Finest Fish Bar' to be allowed to remain open until 1 am from Monday to Thursday and until 2 am from Friday to Sunday, was refused by town councillors who will pass on their recommendations to Pembrokeshire County Council's licensing department.
"I don't see the need for an additional late-night food outlet in that area," commented Clr. Mrs. Christine Brown. "2 am is far too late in my opinion.
"The nightclub along that street already serves late-night food and there are two outlets down Lower Frog Street that slipped through the net long ago, and now the police seem to have that patch under control finally, I don't see the need for creating another area that will attract late-night revellers to make more noise," she added.
Her colleague, Clr. Paul Rapi, agreed and said that the whole proliferation of late-night licences in Tenby, including pubs and food outlets, needed reviewing.
"The quality of life for people living within the town walls is suffering and this town council needs to look at all licensing matters in the town," he remarked.
"People are complaining and will continue to complain, and if they're not happy, then we need to do something about it, and personally I don't think we're doing enough.
"The police are concerned, too, about the late opening of establishments and it leads to people staying longer in the town and later noise, so it needs looking at," added Clr. Rapi.
Clr. Lawrence Blackhall said that he wouldn't support the application and that it was the town council's responsibility to try and ensure that late licences in the town were not extended any further.
"I don't want to see residents effectively driven out of living inside the town walls," he remarked.
