The till has rung for the final time at Jameston's long-established village shop.

Proprietors Dennis and Maggie Williams retired on January 23 after 39 years of serving the community with all their daily needs.

Dennis and Maggie, who reside at Style House, Jameston took over the stores from Dennis's mother on January 1, 1963, and, over the years, have become well-known figures in village and surrounding area.

"We have spent some very happy years at the shop," Maggie told the Observer this week.

"It has been a pleasure to run the shop as all our customers have become our friends and we will miss them all."

To say thank-you to Dennis and Maggie, a surprise retirement party was held for the couple at the Swan Lake Inn on Friday night when they were presented with various gifts from the residents of the Manorbier Parish.

"It really was a wonderful evening and such a surprise. We were totally overwhelmed by everyone's kindness and generosity," added Maggie, who will be spending her retirement by continuing to devote her time organising events in the village and being involved in various other organisations in the parish.
