Sir,
Alun Morgan's letter (August 21) concerning red squirrels, raises an intelligent notion worthy of investigation and development. Up here in Cumbria and Northumberland, we form the vanguard in the battle to remove greys and protect our native reds, now resting on the cusp of extinction.
It was here in Cumbria, that HRH Prince Charles came earlier in the year to give his support to the newly formed Red Squirrel Survival Trust.
If Britain continues its inexorable sleep-walk towards red squirrel annihilation, perhaps an island population would provide a last-gasp chance to save an iconic species.
Expressed like this, perhaps the good Abbot could be persuaded to think again, thus finding a place in Creation as well as in Heaven.
Bernard Widdowson,
Two Hoots,
Cumbria.
