Students enrolling on the new Applied GCE in ICT (double award) course at Pembrokeshire College from September will find themselves at the leading edge of learning technology. Students will receive their normal allocation of taught lessons, but in addition, key aspects of the course will be completely paperless, with all modules and assignments being completed on-line - a first for an A-Level college in West Wales. Students on the 12 unit module of the new applied vocational A-Level will also be loaned an industry- standard laptop for the duration of their course. This will enable them to work anywhere and anytime on their projects. The college aims to have a wireless network set up at the Haverfordwest campus by September so that internet-related and networked work can be completed on site. "More and more college work is being completed on the college managed learning environment (MLE)," said assistant principal, Barry Walters. "This gives students greater flexibility to access their learning at college, home or at their place of work at a time when it suits them. "The Applied GCE in ICT further develops this trend of flexible learning and provides appropriate skills for employment in a modern 21st century organisation. "The main difference with this new course is that it works in a similar way to modern business, requiring a great deal of on-line research, investigation and communication. This makes it ideal for a wide range of further study at university or ICT related careers as programmers, systems analysts or computer technicians. "In fact, two of the modules - the Digital Economy and the Knowledge Worker - examine how e- business operates in a dynamic organisation, whether it's an SME or a large multinational." In the last five years, Pembrokeshire College has consistently achieved outstanding A-level results for under 19-year-olds. In 2004, there was a 97 per cent success rate (A-E), with 77 per cent being A-C grades and 27 per cent A grades. The current pass rate for main vocational courses is 92 per cent.
