The fourth phase of a landscape scheme aimed at enhancing the county's roads began this month. The Pembrokeshire Gateways programme involves improvement work at 14 sites across the county. Among the locations due for a makeover are roundabouts at Merlins Bridge, Sentry Cross and New Hedges, as well as sites at Greenhill School, Waterloo Road in Pembroke Dock and Dyffryn in Goodwick. The Pembrokeshire Gateways Scheme, which is 80 per cent funded by the Welsh Assembly Government, aims to improve the visual appearance of key roads into and within the county. The first phase saw improvements from Day's roundabout in Haverfordwest to Withybush Hospital, while the second saw landscaping along the Haverfordwest to Fishguard road. The third phase saw work at 11 sites between Haverfordwest and St. David's. The fourth phase, which will be the largest part of the programme so far, began on February 5 and will take 12 weeks to complete. Clr. Brian Hall, cabinet member for transportation and the environment, said visually attractive roads were attractive to both residents and visitors and were an expression of civic pride. "Although this work will cause some disruption to motorists, it will be kept to a minimum. And, in the long term the new scheme will help reduce maintenance costs at roundabouts and laybys."
