Pirates, clues, quizzes, memory verse challenges and a look into Paul's letter to the Philippians, from the Bible, led the children of the Landlubbers holiday club to one thing - TREASURE!
The 39 children who attended last week's half-term holiday club, Landlubbers, which took place in Tenby's Deer Park Church basement, had a brilliant week. Led by Scripture Union's Ruth Lewis (Captain Yo-Ho) and Deer Park's Sharron Hardwick (Captain Heave-Ho), the children were taken on a journey through Paul's letter to the Philippians.
With over 16 adult leaders, the children played a variety of brilliant games, led by Jamie Hatswell. Quizzes were held each day, led by Trina Sutton, Kevin and Naomi Adams and Carol Ansel. Billy and Rhonwen Evans led the Memory Verse Challenge.
Each day there were craft activities, by Pam and Sharron, where the children made treasure chests and lighthouses, decorated flags and eggs and even designed pirate board games.
Castaway, Pam Holmes, left the Landlubbers a map and a set of Castaway Clues to follow each day. These were solved as a result of Bible readings from the Landlubbers log books and by the crazy antics of the two presenting pirates, Captains Yo-Ho and Heave-Ho.
On day one the children discovered a little about the life of Paul. They found out how Paul met Jesus, and how his life was dramatically changed as a result. Paul ended up under house arrest for being Jesus' follower, but this did not stop him from writing letters. By reading parts of Paul's letter to the Philippians, the children would discover the true treasure. Position on the Castaway's Map: Prisoner's Post.
Day two took the children on a journey through the birth, life, death and resurrection of Jesus. Position on the Castaway's Map: Skull Hill. Moving on to day three, the children discovered: 'Here's a message Paul did write, we should try to shine out bright. Among the people - like a light. We should try to do what's right,' said the Castaway Clue, leading to the lighthouse on the Castaway's Map.
By day four the children looked at how following Jesus was compared to a race. Paul in his letter said: we are not yet perfect, so we should keep our eyes fixed on the goal, heaven, where the prize is waiting, because of what Jesus has done for us all. Position on the Castaway's Map: The end of the river.
Finally, day five, showed the children how they can bring their worries to God, just like Paul did when he was shipwrecked and imprisoned. Nothing is too big for God to help us through, if we only ask him.
The completed journey on the Castaway's Map, looked like the numbers three and eight. This reminded the children of the numbers of the week's memory verse: Philippians 3.8: The children had discovered the greatest treasure of all - JESUS! All had a brilliant week, which was concluded by a Pirate Party on Sunday. The children and their families joined Deer Park Church to celebrate together, with lots more fun, games and prizes. Thanks go to all who helped to prepare and lead the Landlubbers Club; you all helped it to be a great success.
