There were probably some slight feelings of guilt when Lamphey History Group met on Tuesday evening (writes R.G.). Our charismatic speaker was Wendy Marmara from Planed, who spoke about recording local history, something we have often talked about, but never quite got round to starting.

Our neighbours at Carew have produced a DVD and Wendy assured us that any group could do the same;

plenty of help is available. She explained the 'nuts and bolts' of a project, deciding who should be interviewed and by whom. She explained that it is necessary to obtain consent for recording material to be made public. If people want to speak very freely about the friends and neighbours, it is possible for material to be withheld for up to 30 years!

Most villages in Pembrokeshire will want to record the changes in farming, but many, Lamphey included, have a lot of war-time memories. The Americans were here and I have been told that they used the big bread ovens to roast their meat. The inhabitants of Lamphey could often smell what they very seldom ate!

Wendy also mentioned the lovely South Pembrokeshire dialect and many unique local words. As we all travel more and watch more television, these are slowly being lost; record them while you can.

Lastly she mentioned the more technical details, microphones, laptops etc. She has a wealth of experience to draw on and a friendly and approachable manner; we really should start.

Our next meeting in the Church Hall will be at 7.30 pm on Tuesday, November 13, when the speaker will be John Wittaker on the History of Quakers in Pembrokeshire.
