Sir, Only two original things from the original Gatehouse Hotel were preserved for re-use in the replica building, but only one has made it into the new scheme; the pillars supporting the White Lion Street balcony. The cast iron railings from the balcony, having sat visible on the site with the pillars for four years were moved by the constructors and are now reportedly stolen! The developers are having to replace the railings to a similar design. On the Guildhall Glendower House redevelopment, formerly county owned, none of the many original railings around the site were re-used; even the eight superb deep cast Victoria Pier railing panels were lost without trace. Staircases there went the same way. Clearly a pattern of development is repeating - a lack of respect and care for local heritage. Original features hard and expensive to remake today are being lost. Even when very little of the original is agreed to be retained, that goes too. The quality of the replacement seems in question - look at the weak Croft Norton pavement slabs installed at the Guildhall Glendower site - over 70 already broken by vehicles parking on the pavement. Old features can be cared for - the county have recently twice carefully repaired movement to the original robust railings above the cliff on The Croft junction. I remain, yours, somewhat cynical and disappointed,
Harry Gardiner,
Chairman, Tenby Civic Society
