Kilgetty councillors have stated that they are ‘wholeheartedly determined’ to retain the village’s Community Centre, in light of the fact that the land it sits on, has been put up for sale by the Co-op.

Councillors have stated that the Community Centre is used by over 300 people every week, whilst the car park and public toilets are also a valuable asset to local residents and many visitors.

The three facilities in jeopardy all sit on a piece of land in the village located off Carmarthen Road, which is now being advertised for sale as ‘a compelling opportunity for developers and investors' via Independent property consultants Hartnell Taylor Cook, who are acting on behalf of the Co-op.

A spokesperson for the Co-op said: “A parcel of land in Kilgetty, which Co-op does not use for trading purposes, is being marketed for sale.”

Marketing for the land states:‘The subject site comprises a parcel of land situated immediately to the west of the Co-op food store, extending to approximately 2.32 acres (0.94 ha). The site is broadly level with a tarmacked surface and vehicular access achievable directly from Carmarthen Road and via a rear vehicular access directly off the A477 roundabout.

‘The area comprises residential, community and commercial uses, offering the potential for future development, subject to obtaining the necessary planning permissions.

‘The site’s proximity to existing amenities and public transport links supports a range of potential uses, including residential, commercial and mixed use development, making it a compelling opportunity for developers and investors.

‘The site is not currently allocated within the Local Development Plan but sits within a settlement boundary, with surrounding land having been successfully developed in recent years.’

Commenting on behalf of Kilgetty and Begelly Community Council, chair Cllr Diane Lockley said: “As you may be aware, the Co-op organisation have made the decision to sell a large area of land that includes the Kilgetty Community Centre, the car park and the toilet block.

“This is of great concern for Kligetty and Begelly Community Council, as we know how important the Community Centre is to our community, with so many of you using it on a daily basis.

“This matter was discussed in detail at the last general meeting held on July 10. As a Community Council, we are wholeheartedly determined to do our best to retain the Community Centre and are putting forward our intentions to the agents who are responsible for the sale.

“We would welcome hearing from anyone who uses the Community Centre and how it makes a difference in your life.

“We would be interested in stories/experiences of families and friends and how the centre has benefited them in the past,” she added.

Users of the Community Centre, have been expressing its importance to the area on social media, with one stating: “The community centre is the hub of the village. There are so many different groups that use it and for some it is their only opportunity to get out and have company.”
