Kilgetty AFC second team kicked off their first home game of the season against Cosheston Cougars AFC with two brand new Fairtrade footballs on Saturday.
The two Fairtrade footballs were presented by Fair Trade Wales voluntary schools' speaker, Sharron Hardwick. Kilgetty AFC player/coach, Mikey Beynon, approached Sharron when he heard about her efforts to promote Fair Trade in football.
Sharron agreed to raise funds for the team at the recent Kilgetty Fun Day by holding a Fairtrade football shoot, where she was supported by New Life Christian Fellowship, local author and songwriter, Ruthie, and her husband Jay Thomas.
The two international match standard footballs were purchased from The Fair Corporation, who have over 30 years of experience in Fair Trade and sustainable development and are global leaders in Fairly Traded sports balls as well as other fashion, sport and leisure products.
With FA football clubs splashing out nearly half-a-billion in the recent transfer window, Sharron noted an unfair imbalance.
"Unfair decisions can ruin games, but unfair trade ruins lives," she said. "Many football producers work long hours for little pay, in harsh sweatshop conditions, often including child labour. This has to stop! Supporting Fair Trade is one way of preventing this. We should think big, not only bringing Fair Trade into local clubs, but throughout the entire FA. If you like football, please think, buy and support Fairtrade and kick injustice out of football!"
