Golf Society
The winter league season of the Kilgetty Golf Society teed off on Wednesday, September 8, at the superbly manicured South Pembrokeshire Golf Club (writes B. J.A.W.). The weather was exactly what the golfers ordered. The sun shone brightly, with light breezes, which made playing conditions perfect. Leading the way were the 'Last of the Summer Wine' trio, in the shape of Roy 'Grumpy' Good, Tom 'Evergreen' Pritchard and Barry 'Chippy' Wood. Although totalling 188 years young, this sprightly trio were the surprise packet of the day, read on as to find out why! Next to tee off were the much fancied Terry 'Hippo' Harvey, Martin 'Arthur Daley' Davies and Jim 'Pipes' Hinchcliffe. Unfortunately they faded into mere oblivion. The third group off consisted of Rick 'Putterless' Lewis, Pat 'Postie' Casement and Keith 'Luke' Warmington. They could have done better, but for a dramatic change - according to Rick - in the back nine greens! Next out were Steve 'Squinty' Scanlon, Trevor 'Santa' Lewis and new member and work colleague Kim 'Karts' Harland, who was certainly the surprise player of the day - watch out mate, handicaps are easily cut! Finally to grace the fairways, I say this with tongue in cheek, were the comparatively diminutive Gary 'Shiner' Hopkins and Gareth 'Gateaux' Phillips, along with heavyweight Mark 'Woody' Wood and super heavyweight and genial giant Don 'Newton' Abbot. This quartet must have roared with laughter at their antics during their round, while also playing some impressive golf. Once back in the clubhouse, the players enjoyed a beer or two before adjourning to the dining room to face a feast, that not only opened every eye, but also more than satisfied everyone's hunger. After, literally, dragging ourselves away from the dining tables, time had arrived for the formalities of presenting prizes to the deserving players. 'Woody' opened proceedings by thanking the South Pembs. Club for the use of their superb facilities. He then thanked the caterers for the feast of food, saying that it was the best after golf meal we have had to date. Then the prizes were presented to: Individuals - winner Tom Pritchard; runner-up Kim Harland; 3. Ricky Lewis; best OAP - Barry Wood; wooden spoon - Keith Warmington; nearest pin - Gary Hopkins; longest drive - Don Abbot; Over 20 handicap - Tom Pritchard; team - winners Tom Pritchard, Roy Good and Barry Wood. Concluding, 'Woody' thanked all the players for their support and for making it such a successful day. Long may it continue. Those who were unable to make it, really missed out on a great day. The next two society dates will be on Wednesday October 13, at Bancyfelin, and Wednesday, November 10, at Milford Haven. It is imperative to contact either 'Woody' or 'Chippy' as soon as possible with your availability for these two dates, so that necessary arrangements can be made. Football Fixtures
