RESOLUTE ROGER RULES THE ROOST
On Wednesday, March 9, Kilgetty Golf Society's monthly medal was held at Trefloyne Golf Course, aka 'Golf's Hidden Gem', not only because of the fantastic course, but also for its fabulous location and all it has to offer - not just golf for any ability - but also superb accommodation.
On this occasion, Roger 'Sombrero' Handcock was in resolute mood and deserved to lift the coveted bottle of whisky! He said, and I quote, "It's not the winning, but proving you are the best!" Listen matey, a severe handicap review awaits, I promise.
What a great change the weather was for this occasion, as both January and February meets were ruined by torrential rain. Turnout was average in numbers, although a few more were expected. Still an enjoyable day was had by all who played.
After the mandatory coffee and bacon rolls - and super they were too - play began at 10 am on the dot. There were five teams of three and one of four, and, although everyone had a lot of fun, competition within each team was fierce.
The three to start proceedings were Bobby 'Superstud' King, Simon 'The Pieman' Davies and John 'Bwana' James. Great things were expected from this talented trio and they did not disappoint.
Second team to face the tricky first were Mark 'The Angel' Wood, Mark 'Skids' Brindley and Rick 'Righteous' Lewis. Although steady returns, they flattered to deceive.
Following them were Peter 'Big Bird' Hughes, Mike 'Leaks' Bannister and Trevor 'Santa' Lewis (Trefloyne's seniors' captain). Almost won the team prize, but ran out of steam on the last furlong!
John 'Pink Panther (aka Spindles)' Hargrave, along with Steve 'Araf' Jones and Martin 'Dangler' Davies (NFG Mate), were next to tee off, but alas only managed a joint last team position with the next trio, who were John 'Homer' Perrott, Steve 'Fillings' Allen (papa of Joe) and Kelvin 'Curtains' Boughey, who followed hot on their heels.
Last to try their luck was a fourball of Roger 'Sombrero' Handcock, Steve 'Eleanor' Rigby, Richard 'Nelson' Davies and Barry 'Chippy' Wood. Roger played solid golf throughout the 18 and deservedly carried off the spoils. As for the rest - could have been better.
Back in the clubhouse for a pint or two, and we then trooped into the dining room for a fantastic Trefloyne meal, and it really was. Thanks Sarah, Tom and staff. Unfortunately, there were no seconds!
Once back at the bar the raffle was held and then Mark began the speeches and presentations. He thanked everyone who played, for once again being stalwarts of Kilgetty Golf Society. He congratulated the caterers for the fabulous meal and groundstaff/greenkeepers for the immaculate condition of the course.
Then the prizes were presented to the following: winner - 'Sombrero' Handcock; runner-up:- 'Leaks' Bannister; 3. 'Superstud' King (on countback).
Nearest the pin - 'Eleanor' Rigby; longest drive (on 17th) - 'Superstud' King; OAP - 'Bwana' James; 20-plus handicap - 'Skids' Brindley; winning team - 'Sombrero' Handcock, 'Eleanor' Rigby, 'Nelson' Davies and 'Chippy' Wood; yellow ball winners - 'Superstud' King, 'Bwana' James and 'Pieman' Davies.
Mark then asked his dad Barry to present the wooden spoon. This was done with great delight as the recipient was none other than his club 'PFP' 'Dangler' Davies, who took the leg pull in the right spirit. This concluded the official proceedings and everyone was free to leave and return to the bosoms of their family.
