On a grey, but dry morning, on Wednesday, August 12, we ventured down the A477 towards Pembroke Dock to play golf at South Pembs. Golf Club. The course looked in immaculate condition and so it turned out to, with the greens playing perfectly true.
Terry 'Shower' Harvey capitalised on these conditions to romp home six points ahead of his nearest rival. The bad news, for him, is a drastic handicap cut, and not a moment too soon may I say (echoed by all).
The turnout for this day was very disappointing, only 14 competitors - but those who took up the clubs had a most enjoyable day.
Play started at 10.30 am - after breakfast of bacon rolls and coffee - and consisted of two three balls and two four balls, and first off were Terry 'Shower' Harvey, John 'The Flood' Hargraves and Tony 'Theodolite' Mathias. Apart from Harvey, the other two had very ordinary rounds.
Following them were Steve 'Eleanor' Rigby with father and son Barry 'Chippy' and Mark 'Shrek' Wood. This trio was playing for more than honours on the day - all will be revealed later. Their play, however, was not up to 'scratch'!
The first fourball consisted of John 'Homer' Perrott, Wyn 'Putters' Hopkins, Rob 'Upsidedownhead' Cottle and Steve 'Araf' Jones. They took so long completing their round that a search party was almost launched to see if they had jumped into the Cleddau (bad round).
The final fourball to grace the course comprised of Rick 'Megane' Lewis, Glyn '2 shots' Jones, Ed 'The Beast' Pritchard and John 'Waterworks' Sheppard. These guys played solid golf and scooped the team prize.
On returning to the clubhouse we were treated to a wonderful meal by Jan (thanks). Once all the stragglers were back in and suitably fed, Mark made an announcement about our Winter League which ended on this day, and indeed their was an amazing result.
Tied for first place were Steve Rigby and Barry Wood, and guess what, there was also a tie for second place, this being shared by Mark Wood and Roger Handcock, with Rick Lewis in third place.
Well done all of you, plus all those who just missed out.
He then thanked South Pembs. Golf Club for the amazing condition of the course and for hosting our day. We then thanked Jan for the wonderful food she put before us - everyone enjoyed it, as the clean plates indicated.
We then had the raffle, after which the prizes were presented by Rob Cottle, of the Ivy Bush Inn, Narberth, who very generously sponsored all the day's prizes. A very big thank you to you Rob for your generosity.
Finally, the results: In first place with 36 points was 'The Shower' Harvey; 2. 'Megane' Lewis with 30 pts, 3. 'The Shrek' Wood with 29 pts.
OAP prize - 'Chippy' Wood; over 20 handicap - 'Waterworks' Sheppard; wooden spoon - 'USDH' Cottle; nearest pin - 'Chippy' Wood; longest drive - 'Megane' Lewis; twos competition - 'The Shower' and 'Theodolite'; team - 'Megane' Lewis, 'The Beast' Pritchard, '2 shots' Jones and 'Theodolite' Sheppard.
Thanks once again for supporting the society, long may it continue. Next month's venue has not yet been confirmed - watch this space for details. The date will be Wednesday, September 9. Please make yourselves available as Mark deserves the support for all the hard work he puts in during the year organising these fixtures. Have a great golfing month.
