On a disappointing gloomy, misty, damp morning, on Wednesday, March 11, the society took to the fairways of the immaculately manicured Derllys Court Golf Course at Bancyfelin, and Tim 'Gavel' Davies was the master of the conditions to romp off with first prize. Hear! hear!
A good turnout - as expected - of 21 hardy golfers eagerly awaited the 10 am starting bell. However, due to a 'senior moment' by Bob 'Jalna' King, he and his chauffeur Stuart 'Smokey Joe' Evans arrived unaware that they were 30 minutes late! Woody managed to juggle the pecking order so as to accommodate the intrepid duo, and all was well. We were privileged to have the use of both first and 10th tees, which helped, as the weather was so iffy.
Leading off from the first were Steve 'Boppa' Pearce, Steve 'Micklethwaite' Kenning and Alan 'B&B' Haggarty. A good round - but just not there.
Next were Roger 'Tonee' Handcock (winner last month), Phil 'James Park' Rees and Richard 'Nelson' Davies. Below par round, might have been better had Roger won the 'Yellow Cap'!
Third off the first were Don 'Bud' Abbott! (name changed by deed poll), Steve 'Eleanor' Rigby and Barry 'Chippy' Wood. Could have won team prize if the putts had gone in, but had to settle for silver.
Last off this tee were the 'businessmen' trio in the form of Stuart 'Smokey Joe' Evans, Bobby 'Jalna' (senior moment) King and Bob 'Cartwheel' (now retired) Simpson. A round as disappointing as the economic climate!
The 10th tee golfers were led off by Neil 'Mouse' Evans, Terry 'The Shower' Harvey and Richard 'Tiger' Davies. Team gold medallists due to local knowledge and good golf.
Following them, debutant Mark 'Skids' Brindley, along with Glyn 'Da Loo' Jones and Tim 'Gavel' Davies. Except for Tim, a well below par round. Welcome to the society Skids, hope you enjoyed.
Hot on their heels and last off the 10th were Martin 'Odd Job' Davies, Frank 'Meidrim' Simmons and Mark 'Woody' Wood. For such accomplished golfers, their round left everyone aghast.
After a warming shower, we invaded the clubhouse for refreshments. Thirst quenching drinks were followed by the Walters family serving up their scrumptious food, which certainly lived up to expectations. Not a crumb was left by the appreciative diners. Unanimous vote - excellent.
After this began the formalities with the monthly raffle, followed by Woody welcoming and thanking everyone for once again supporting the society. He then thanked Derllys Court for hosting such a successful day and the caterer for the superb meal. He welcomed Mark 'Skids' Brindley and said he hoped to see him with the society each month.
He then made the presentations. In first place, Tim 'Gavel' Davies 37 pts, second Barry 'Chippy' Wood (better back nine) from third Terry 'The Shower' Harvey.
Wooden spoonist Mark 'Skids' Brindley - don't fret mate, this is par for the course for most debutants (nerves etc). OAP Richard 'Nelson' Davies. 20-plus handicap - 'James Park' Rees. Nearest the pin - 'Meidrim' Simmons. Longest drive - 'Jalna' King.
There were two 2s achieved by 'Mouse' and 'Meidrim'.
Team champs - 'Mouse', 'The Shower' and 'Tiger' with 96 pts. Considering the conditions a very good score.
Woody then informed the room that the April day out will be on Wednesday, April 8 - venue to be advised. For those with recurring 'senior moments', tee time is 10 am sharp.
Please keep reading the Tenby Observer for further information. Thanks again for your lasting support, long may it continue.
Finally, remember keep your head down and your chin up.
