Newport Pembs. golf course is not the place to be when it's freezing cold, windy and rain expected about mid-day. Seventeen brave (or foolish!) golfers turned out last Wednesday for the first KGS outing of 2009.
Sure enough, the rain arrived on schedule, bringing with it an increase in wind speed. Slight miss-hits sent the ball on a graceful arc, either landing on the wrong fairway or, disappearing into dense undergrowth. This was the first meeting in over five years that no-one was on the green for nearest-the-pin - maybe the wind was a factor!
Points were scarce; only two players reached 30. The 'Scribe' had a disastrous day, having five strokes off his handicap for last month's win, went to pieces and ended up with the wooden spoon.
Three teams of three and two foursomes began teeing-off at 9.30 am. Teams were:
Steve 'Oars' Jones, Roger 'elf-n-safety' Hancock and Wyn 'Lob-wedge' Hopkins.
John 'Scribe' James, Barry 'Chippy' Wood and Glyn 'Da Loo' Jones.
Mark 'Woody' Wood, Tim 'Gavel' Davies and Frank 'Meidrim' Simmons.
John 'Geordie' Hargraves, Richard 'Nelson' Davies, Steve 'Eleanor' Rigby and Lee 'Long-shot' Lewis.
Terry 'Foggy' Harvey, Bobby 'Jalna' King, Stewart 'Smokey Joe' Evans and Trevor 'Santa' Lewis.
Results were: 1. Tim 'Gavel' Davies (32); 2. Steve 'Eleanor' Rigby (30); 3. Wyn 'Lob-wedge' Hopkins (29).
OAP - Barry 'Chippy' Wood (27); Over 20 handicap - Bobby 'Jalna' King (28).
Longest drive - Bobby 'Jalna' King.
Team prize - Steve 'Oars' Jones, Roger 'elf-n-safety' Hancock and Wyn 'Lob-wedge' Hopkins.
Two players had birdie twos, Barry 'Chippy' Wood and Steve 'Eleanor' Rigby.
Well done everyone, you all deserve a prize for finishing the course. The large bowl of cawl soon revived the spirits, with all looking forward to the next challenge, February 11, at Fairwood Park, near Swansea. Please let Mark or Barry know asap if you can play.
