This month's outing was to the pastoral setting of Trefloyne Golf Club. The weather was excellent and the 25 players anticipated a fine round of golf. One new member, Steven 'The Phone' Pearce was given a warm welcome. Considering the rainfall this winter, the course was in very good condition, and scores were expected to be far better than the January figures. As the course was busy, we were unable to tee-off from two tees. There were seven threesomes and one fourball, almost an hour and a half between the first and last to tee-off. First to the tee were Steve 'Stetson' Ousnam, Bobby 'Jalna' King and Phil 'Sheepskin' Rugg. It was not their day, scores of 20, 19 and 22 suggested the course was not playing easy. Next off were Trevor 'Santa Lewis', John 'Scribe' James and Tim 'Gavel' Davies. With a few near misses on the green, their scores were 32, 26 and 33. Teeing off third were Frank 'Meidrim' Simmons, Rob 'Mr. Fix-it' Thomas and Lee 'Long-shot' Lewis. They stormed round, came in full of smiles, not surprising, scores of 27, 31 and 38 - more shots from Lee's already low handicap! Fourth away were Allan 'B&B' Haggarty, Steve 'Eleanor' Rigby and Steve 'Oars' Jones. Some wayward shots kept their scores to 21, 28 and 22. Setting off next were Adrian 'Lightning' Alman, Barry 'Chippy' Wood and Steve 'The Phone' Pearce. Chippy had his usual steady round, finishing with 34 pts, his companions having 26 apiece. Following this trio were Mark 'Woody' Wood, Gareth 'Stranger' Phillips and Gary 'Speed-date' Hopkins. Woody's handicap weighed heavily on him as he struggled to 21 pts, Speed-date was also under par, scoring 27pts; Stranger, not seen for many months, managed 29 pts. The last three-ball were Phil 'Buggy' Rees, Wyn 'The Spoon' Hopkins and Richard 'Nelson' Davies. Scores of 23, 18 and 24 gave one of them a chance of a 'prize', Finally, the fourball of Glyn 'Chainsaw' Jones, Keith 'Lukewarm' Warmington, John 'Homer' Perrott and Darrell 'Ex-rods' Jones. Once again Ex-rods showed some of his past skills with a creditable 36 pts. His co-players came in with 23, 32 and 22, respectively. In first place with 38 pts was Lee 'Longshot' Lewis - well played Lee, soon be off scratch! Second place went to Darrel 'Ex-rods' Jones - there's plenty of life in the old chap yet! Third place went to the evergreen Barry' Chippy' Wood with his 34 pts. Team prize was won by the trio of Frank 'Meidrim' Simmons, Rob 'Mr. Fix-it' Thomas and Lee 'Longshot' Lewis with a combined total of 96pts. Nearest the pin was Ex-Rods Jones, still looking for the hole-in-one. Our newcomer, Steven 'The Phone' Pearce showed he was a formible driver, taking the prize for the longest drive -good start Steve. The OAP prize went to Trevor 'Santa' Lewis for his 32 pts. With a grand total of 18 pts, the wooden spoon went to Wyn 'The Spoon' Hopkins - he could not find the hole today! We kept hearing a voice saying, "I had a two" - it was finally traced to Frank 'Meidrim' Simmons. Did you really have a two Frank? Thanks to Trefloyne for their hospitality, especially Helen and Arno for an excellent meal. Also thanks to Woody for organising the event. The next meeting will be on March 12 -destination to be arranged.
