Firstly, I would like to thank Barry 'Chippy' Wood for his society reports over the past three years. No doubt many of you have wondered about the nicknames he has used; some are obvious, but others somewhat nebulous! He has given me leave to change them as I see fit. This month the venue was Carmarthen Golf Club and for once the weather was kind to us. The course was in excellent condition and this reflected in the high standard of play. Two newcomers were welcomed to the society, Giles 'HTV' Smith and Alan 'Scottie' Taylor. Both enjoyed their debut and expect to be regulars in the future. First group on the tee was Tim 'Gavel' Davies, Ken 'Drains' Badham and Ricky 'Raffles' Lewis - he's bought a new putter! A formidable trio to set the ball rolling, but did not quite live up to expectations. Next off, the much-improved Glyn '28 shots' Jones, Roy 'Evil Knievel' Good and John 'Scribe' James. Roy enjoyed the round on his motorised buggy, buzzing about the course like an angry bee! Third away were Giles 'HTV' Smith, Richard 'Nelson' Davies and Lee 'Larnie' Lewis, who once again played above his handicap - another cut awaits. They were followed by Phil 'Sheepskin' Rugg, Gary 'Windows' Du Toit and Trevor 'Santa' Lewis. Unfortunately, Gary had one of those days, with nothing going right, so no top prize for them. Next away were Gareth 'Big Breakfast' Phillips and the Woods, Chippy and Woody, a combination capable of taking the honours. However, they could not hole the putts and fell by the wayside. Another strong trio followed, namely, Keith 'Luke' Warmington, Graham 'Rex' Harrison and Gary 'Harpic' Hopkins. 'Rex' seems to have lost his rhythm, better luck next time. Eighth trio away was Tomas 'The Flag' Harvey, Pat 'Postie' Casement and Mal 'Taps' Davies. A much improved round by Tomas kept him well away from the wooden spoon and Mal was impressive with his driving. Last trio to tee off was Wayne 'Screws' Connaught, Alan 'Scottie' Taylor and Neil 'Mighty Mouse' Evans. They played well, but did not quite make the prizes. There was also a fourball of John 'Homer' Perrot, Wyn 'Gasolene' Hopkins, Adrian 'Lightning' Allman and Steve 'Stetson' Oulsman. A search party was ready to look for them when they appeared on the 18th fairway looking weary but pleased with themselves. After a hot and humid round, we gathered at the 19th for much-needed liquid refreshments and a sumptuous meal. Thanks to the caterers for an excellent carvery and jam roly poly with custard. Finally the time arrived for Woody to announce the winners. Team prize went to John 'Homer' Perrot, Wyn 'Gasolene' Hopkins, Adrian 'Lighting' Allman and Steve 'Stetson' Oulsman with a score of 99 points (best three) - well done lads. Highest individual prize went to Lee 'Larnie' Lewis. He's making a habit of this - another cut to his handicap! Second with 38 points was Adrian 'Lightning' Allman and third place went to ever steady Ricky 'Raffles' Lewis with 36 points (best back nine). Nearest the pin - Adrian 'Lightning' Allman. Who said 'lightning' only strikes once! Longest drive - Mal 'Taps' Davies. Not true that he used a sand wedge! OAP and over 20 handicap went to the man on the scooter, Roy 'Evil Knievil' Good. He will be below 20 next time. The wooden spoon went to Gary 'Windows' Du Toit - bad luck Gary. Once again our thanks to 'Woody' for organising another great day. Thanks also to Ricky for the raffle. Next month's meeting is on August 9, possibly at Milford Haven.
