Once again, Kilgetty Golf Society was on the move last week. On this occasion, Cardigan Golf Club was the venue -reputedly the most picturesque links course in West Wales, and who dare dispute it. Superb undulating fairways, well manicured and receptive greens and with forbidding rough along the way, encourages accurate play. "Oh what a beautiful day," were Rick's words soon after sinking a long winning putt at the 18th and final hole of his almost perfect round. It was indeed a beautiful day, except for the strong gusting winds, which caused havoc to most of us mere mortals last Wednesday and made Rick's winning round of 43 points an amazing feat. It was also a beautiful day because it was my birthday and celebrating it with my friends playing golf was an honour, a day I shall never forget. Thanks to Gary and Mark for some surprises along the way. We were greeted at the club with cups of hot coffee and scrumptious bacon rolls, which warmed the innerds before facing the elements. Teeing off first - into the teeth of the wind - were Lee 'Larnie' Lewis, Pat 'Postie' Casement and Barry 'Chippy' Wood. A satisfactory day, but not 'fantabulous.' Sorry I didn't play better. Hot on the heels of the first trio were three huge hitters in the shapes of Mark 'Woody' Wood, Neil 'Mouse' Evans and, fresh after his sojourn to the East, Gareth 'Goa' Phillips. A round not as good as others had forecast. Too many curries and too many kings, Gareth! I'm only jealous! Third to drive off from the picturesque first were Derek 'Bubble' Bath, Len 'Corrie' Fairclough and Gary 'I'm a Lady' Hopkins. They blamed the exquisite scenery for distracting their concentration. Now I have heard it all! Fourth trio to try their luck included last month's winner in the huge shapes of Don 'Millionaire' Abbott along with Tim 'The Gavel' Davies and Daryl 'The Rods' Jones. By their own standards, well pleased. I would be, too, with the team scooping two prizes. Next to 'go off' - meant in the best possible way - were Richard 'Nelson' Davies, Roy 'Very Grumpy' Good and Eddie 'The Angel' Mutch. They could have done better had they not lost their way! Glyn 'Bike' Jones, Phil 'Sheepskin' Rugg and John 'Hulk' James - once known as 'Sniffer,' but I have it on good authority, far 'too old'! This trio faced the elements and returned very disappointed with their round. Next to hit off were Thomas 'The Flag' Harvey, who had an 'amazing' round, Paul 'Porto' James - better than last appearance - and Windsor 'HRH' Royal - all the way from Blackwood at great expensive! Not bad exercise! The next trio comprised of John 'Homer' Perrott, Des 'The Stick' Stone and Rick 'Blarneystone' Lewis - with his luck he must be kissing the 'stone' quite often! An excellent round, well done lads. How about some 'free' lessons Rick! Ninth to tee off were Trevor 'Santa' Lewis, Paul 'Jampot' James and new member Adrian 'Lightening' Alman. Welcome to the madhouse! Hope you enjoyed the day. Last off were Alan 'B and B' Haggerty, Stuart 'Smokey Jones' Evans and Terry 'Hippo' Harvey. This should have been a four ball - where were you 'Fingers'? Not a memorable round, but they will be back! After the players had showered and changed into their glad rags, they adjourned to the 19th to have a glass or two of the 'Amber Nectar.' I received cards and good wishes from my friends and fellow golfers, but more was to come. Once we had finished our superb after-match meal, Gary 'I'm a Lady' called on 'Woody' to present me with a 'half price' cake with one candle. Yes, one, because the cake was too small for the other 68! Cheeky, but true. Everyone then sang 'Happy Birthday', much to my embarrassment; I was gob-smacked! However, I want to take this opportunity to say thanks and I look forward to playing with all of you next month. 'Woody' thanked Cardigan Golf Club for hosting our day and the steward and his catering staff for their hospitality and the mega meals they served up. After recharging our glasses, the presentations followed. 1. Rick 'Blarney Stone' Lewis with an amazing 43 pts; 2. Tim 'The Gavel' Davies with a superb 41 pts; 3. Neil 'Mouse' Evans with another great 38 pts. Considering the blustery gale force winds, these scores were truly phenomenal. Wooden spoon: Roy 'Grumpy' Good - much to the amusement of his weekly partner Mark 'Woody' Wood. Nearest the pin: Des 'The Stick' Stone - quite appropriate. Longest drive: Len 'Corrie' Fairclough - some drive matey! Best OAPs: Darryl 'The Rods' Jones and Derek 'Bubble' Bath. High handicap: Paul 'Jampot' James 35 pts - 'Slasher' Morgan will be on your case! Team: With an excellent 103 total, this prize was won by John 'Homer' Perrott, Des 'The Stick' Stone and Rick 'Blarney Stone' Lewis, and thoroughly deserved. After the conclusion of the formalities, 'Woody' thanked his fellow golfers for their continued suppor. He again thanked Cardigan Golf Club and reminded the room that the next Society match would be at Carmarthen Golf Club on Wednesday, March 8, tee-off at 10 am. Please support this day in order to make it another successful occasion.
