Fresh from his dynamic performance on television's 'Who Wants to be a Millionaire', Don 'Newton' Abbot - to be known hence forth as 'Mr. Millionaire' - went one better at St. Davids Golf Club when, thanks to a devastating round, he scooped the top prize, completely destroying the rest of the KGS golfers. He returned an incredible 44 points - well done big fella! The day dawned resembling that of a bright and beautiful September morn, cloudless blue skies and bright sunshine, and, of course, 'golf'! St. Davids was about to be invaded by 29 keen golfers from Kilgetty Golf Society, all avidly waiting to tame the superb, yet testing course, with its undulating fairways and immaculate greens. This idyllic picture postcard setting, with Whitesands Bay and the north Pembrokeshire coastline as a backdrop, proved a trying challenge, which was gallantly taken up by each player. So finally 'let's play golf'! First off were Phil 'Sheepskin' Rugg, Gary 'Windows' Dutoit and Darryl 'Rods' Jones. An OK round which kept the interest. Following on were Lee 'Larnie' Lewis, Alan 'B and B' Haggarty and Mark 'Woody' Wood. On the whole, not too pleased. Third to tee off were big Don 'Mr. Millionaire' Abbot, Pat 'Postie' Casement, Des 'The Cane' Stone and Glyn 'Dwr' Jones. An exceptional round by these four lovely lads! Somebody had to follow them and this fell to my mate Gary 'I'm a Lady' Hopkins along with Neil 'Mouse' Evans. Gareth 'Goa' Phillips and Steve 'Dentures' Allen. In awe of the previous quartet, my mate failed miserably. John 'Sniffer' James, Rick 'Putterless' Lewis, Trevor 'Santa' Lewis and the powerful Andrew 'Duke' Phillips were next off. Two prize winners amongst them, so a reasonable match. Next team off included the youngest, Thomas 'J.D.' Harvey and the ancient Barry 'Chippy' Wood, along with Roy 'Taxis' Taylor and Tom 'Evergreen' Pritchard. Due to Tom 'losing his way', there was a delayed tee-off. This unsettled us - that's our excuse! Due to a late withdrawal, the next four were actually three and they were Paul 'Jampot' James, John 'Homer' Perrott and Dafydd 'Dai Bach' Evans. They enjoyed themselves and came home all smiles. Finally going out were Terry 'Hippo' Harvey, Eddie 'The Angel' Mutch, Derek 'Bubble' Bath and Roy 'Grumpy' Goode. They, too, returned satisfied. We then retired to the Grove Hotel for after-match repast and refreshments, which were indeed most welcome. 'Woody' welcomed and thanked the players for their support once again and also thanked the caterers for a meal fit for a king (not Bobby, as he was in the US of A)! Then he presented the prizes to the winners: 1. Don 'Mr. Millionaire' Abbott 44 pts (Bye bye handicap!); 2. Gareth 'Goa' Phillips 37 (Enjoy your holiday); 3. Pat 'Postie' Casement 36 (It must be the new trolley). Team - Mr. Millionaire, Postie, The Lane and Dwr. Longest drive - Rick 'Putterless' Lewis (I want to inspect the driver). Nearest the pin - Trevor 'Santa' Lewis (Did you have a new club for Christmas too?). Senior - Barry 'Chippy' Wood (Was I lucky or was I lucky!). Over 20 handicapper - 'Mr. Millionaire' (What a great day for him). Wooden spoonist - This was presented by 'Chippy' to Gary 'I'm a Lady' Hopkins. No excuses please. Thank you. 'Woody' then thanked St. Davids Golf Club for hosting the day and especially the ground staff for the well manicured fairways and the superb greens, which made putting pleasurable. Just a reminder - the next KGS golf day is at Cardigan next month on Wednesday, February 8. Tee-off is at 10 am. Please contact Woody as soon as possible with your availability. Thanks for your continued support. Keep sinking the putts.
