The end of a long and tough season saw these two rivals go head to head, and to the victor the spoils, as the county championship rested on this last vital match at Under 14 level.

Needless to say, the coaches had prepared and despatched both sides to the field of play brimming with confidence and determined to give a good account of themselves.

Kilgetty, in particular, needed to respond to the trouncing they had received at the hands of Tenby prior to the Easter break.

Both sides opened cautiously and it became clear that, 'Kil' were intent upon holding their slender advantage, with two players marking Ashley Prior, the Tenby danger man.

Fortune favours the brave and the front men for Kilgetty of Josh Bevan and Rob Colley were soon turning the screw, with Dan Colley and Paul Brookes covering the midfield,

Tenby also looked threatening, but it was the Kilgetty side who opened the scoring with a superb volley from Rob Colley.

Tenby countered strongly, but again Kilgetty broke and enjoyed a stroke of luck when a speculative lob from Paul Hodge caught out the stranded Tenby goalkeeper, who could do nothing but watch the ball bounce into the net.

Light the blue touch paper and stand well back! The atmosphere was electric, with a large and partisan crowd urging on their favourites and pleading with the referee for an advantage. Mr. Alan Sykes controlled the game well in the face of this onslaught, there being so much at stake for both sides.

Tenby responded magnificently and just before half-time Ashley Prior slipped his markers and fired home following Kilgetty's failure to clear their lines. This match was becoming a classic nail-biting affair.

From the second half whistle Tenby strode into attack and again Prior struck to level the scores. The game flowed in end-to-end fashion, with Tenby hearts in mouth on several occasions and Kilgetty fearing the worst in letting their lead slip.

Kilgetty 'toughed out' the next 10 minutes and settled into a passing game which has been their forte this season.

Tension mounted and players who had given their all now began to struggle, with Kilgetty holding the narrowest of margins in this monumental struggle for title honours.

Tenby lost the services of key defender Jamie Robinson to the searing pain of cramp and Oliver Morgan managed to get a head on a stunning David Jones volley.

Something had to give and Kilgetty persistence paid dividends with a Dan Colley strike following sustained pressure on the Tenby goal.

Tenby heads dropped slightly at this reverse; they had worked hard to wrest this match and the efforts of the previous 50 minutes had taken a toll.

Dan Colley now collapsed with the effects of cramp and all round the field supporters were willing their respective charges to one more last-ditch effort.

Adam, Barry and Dean remained stout at the heart of the Kilgetty defence and indeed 'Kil' could have had the match sewn up with two efforts that came back off the post and a further Dean Lawrence special, which rattled the crossbar.

Rob Whitfield, terrier-like in midfield, tackled as though his life depended upon it and Josh Bevan showed moments of pure class in a thoroughly solid performance. Shane Earp, in the Kilgetty goal, encouraged his defenders and remained focussed on the play throughout.

It must be said that every player was a 'man of the match' on this chilly and breezy evening! Congratulations to Kilgetty and to 'mastermind' Bobby Bevan whose game plan worked like clockwork.

Commiserations to a brave Tenby side. But please lads, next term could we have this title wrapped up before the end of the season... your correspondent's nerves cannot stand another like this one!
