It was the eighth, annual, six-a-side football tournament held at the Kingsmoor Sports field and there was not a Sumo Warrior in sight. There was not even a Sumo reject around either. Sumo himself, alias Dean Rossiter, was there, but this year operating in a different capacity.

It must be a sign of the times when the organising committee only put their boots on to referee the matches. Dean and his fellow organisers, Barry Lewis, Neil Proctor and Bobby Bevan claimed that a lack of real refs and a broken thumb prevented them from a more active participation in this year's very successful event. Whatever the reason, they cannot be accused of lacking interest or effort. They were grateful for the relief from officiating when Gavin Scotcher, Andrew Cope and Steve Briers stepped in as substitutes.

All the hard work and preparation in setting up this very successful tournament in memory of their friend, Huw Lewis, was transferred into making sure that all games were played to the rules and in the right spirit. Huw, who tragically died eight years ago of hypertrophic cardio myopathy, whilst playing football in Arabia, would have appreciated their endeavours and must surely be smiling down on them as the day unfolded.

There was a full complement of 20 teams divided into four leagues each playing on their own pitch. The previous dry weather ensured that the ground underfoot was firm and the sunshine on this Bank Holiday Sunday allowed families and friends to enjoy the spectacle spread out in front of them.
