Councillors for Kilgetty and Begelly have announced the good news that the local Community Centre is to be saved - with an important milestone reached to secure its future.

Councillors stated at the start of the summer that they were ‘wholeheartedly determined’ to retain the village’s Community Centre, in light of the fact that the land it sits on, had been put up for sale by the Co-op.

They pointed towards the fact that the Community Centre is used by over 300 people every week, whilst the car park and public toilets are also a valuable asset to local residents and many visitors.

The three facilities all sit on a piece of land in the village located off Carmarthen Road, which was being advertised for sale via property consultants acting on behalf of the Co-op.

Community Council chair Cllr Diane Lockley stated: “Kilgetty Begelly Community Council is delighted to announce that the Co-op has formally accepted our offer to purchase the Community Centre.

“This important milestone secures the future of the Centre for the benefit of everyone in our community.

“We extend our heartfelt thanks to all those who supported us throughout this process, and to the Co-op for engaging in positive and constructive negotiations,” she added after a meeting held on the evening of Monday, September 15.

County Councillor for the ward of Kilgetty and Begelly, Cllr Alistair Cameron remarked: “This will come as an enormous relief to the many local residents who have been very worried about the possible loss of our community centre.

“It will also secure the future of the public conveniences which need significant renovation.

“Thank you to all of the residents who have supported the Community Council over this issue and it is great that the Council have worked closely together as a team to achieve this fantastic result.”
