After two aborted trips to Bancyfelin Golf Club (due to torrential rain), we finally made it at the third time of asking, and had a fantastic day of golf. Wednesday, August 10, dawned bright and dry, the day set fine, cars and engines revved and we were on our way to play the course we have long-awaited to take on, and what a superbly manicured course it was. Congratulations to the owners and their ground staff for the immaculate condition of both greens and fairways.
After enjoying delicious bacon rolls and several cups of stimulating coffee, 25 eager golfers headed for the first and 10th tees.
FROM FIRST TEE
Leading the way were Gary 'I'm a Lady' Hopkins, Pat 'Postie' Casement and Kim 'Karts' Harland. An excellent round resulting in a team score of 100 points.
Next off were John 'Ginger' Perrott, Tom 'Gavel' Davies and Eddie 'The Angel' Mutch. An acceptable team return of 93 points.
Gary 'Big Bird' Hughes, Roy 'Grumpy' Good and Mark 'Woody' Wood followed closely on their heels. They too returned a most satisfying 97 points. The trio of John 'Sniffer' James, Glyn 'Dwr' Jones and Don 'Newton' Abbott were last off the first tee and returned with an iffy 82 points.
FROM THE 10TH TEE
First off from this tee were new member Robert 'Racy' Rowe, alongside brother-in-law Bernard 'Basher' Bradley and Gareth 'Gateau' Phillips. Didn't they do well with 100 points.
Tom 'Evergreen' Pritchard, Trevor 'Santa' Lewis and Ken 'Drains' Badham were next off and played out of their skins, returning with a winning 119 points. Third off the 10th were Wyn 'Gasoline' Hopkins, Darren 'Lightning' Taylor and Barry 'Chippy' Wood. A quiet round, especially for newcomer 'Lightning,' and they could amass only 81 points.
Finally, the team next off was a fourball consisting of Ricky 'Putterless' Lewis, Graham 'Atkins' Harrison, Keith 'Luke' Warmington and Jim 'Pipes' Hinchliffe. An excellent round totalling 115 points (best three scores).
Once back at the clubhouse, the hosts served up the best, by far, after-match meal we have had to date. All our members commented on this fact. Woody then called on the winners to receive their prizes.
1. Ken 'Drains' Badham 42 pts; 2. Trevor 'Santa' Lewis 40 pts; 3. Jim 'Pipes' Hinchliffe 39 pts (better back nine).
Nearest pin - Wyn 'Gasoline' Hopkins; longest drive - Graham 'Atkins' Harrison (he put all his 'meat' behind his tee-shot at the 11th to win, which goes to show there must be some benefit inthe 'Atkins' diet. How does it go? 'It's all meat, a real treat.'
Best OAP - Trevor 'Santa' Lewis; best over 20 handicap - Ken 'Drains' Badham; wooden spoon - Darren 'Lightning' Taylor (see grandad to sort your handicap!)
Team prize - Tom 'Evergreen' Pritchard, Trevor 'Santa' Lewis and Ken 'Drains' Badham.
After the presentations, Woody thanked everyone for their support and welcomed both new members, Robert and Darren. He then thanked Bancyfelin Golf Club for hosting us and further congratulated them on the condition of the course.
Before closing, he reminded members that the next society outing would be on Wednesday, September 7, the venue being Garnant Park Golf Club, a very testing and picturesque course. He asked to be contacted with availability a week in advance.
We look forward to a good turnout for this one. Please do your best.
