A 52-year-old Pembrokeshire man is taking to the water in a charity fund-raising event for the Wales Air Ambulance later this month. Jerry Swift, of Neyland, will be crossing Scotland by kayak, starting at Fort William at 12 noon on April 27 and finishing at Inverness. "We will be kayaking 92 kilometres in less than three days, irrespective of weather, prevailing winds, monsters," said Jerry, a rope access NDT technician working for CAN (offshore) Ltd., contracting in Chevron Texaco Refinery, Pembroke. He explained: "At present we have six definite paddlers, most from the Aberdeen area, and myself from Pembrokeshire. The main beneficiaries for the event will be Scottish Disability Sport and Flyability. However, I am taking part to raise as much money as I can for Wales Air Ambulance." Jerry has been in training since January he says he is ready for the event. This week, he met with volunteers for Wales Air Ambulance at the Begelly Arms and described the background to the trip. He was presented with a lucky mascot Biggles Bear and more sponsorship monies. Both the Begelly Arms in Begelly and the Angel Inn in Narberth have information and sponsor forms and everyone is invited to help this life-saving charity by backing Jerry with some sponsorship. He has already raised £1,500 and main sponsors to date are: Can (offshore) Ltd; Sinclair Garages Neyland and Swansea; The Ferry Inn, Hazelbeach; St. Ishmaels School; friends, neighbours and family; work colleagues at Chevron. Corporate sponsorship is particularly welcome, but individuals giving just £1 are equally valuable. Company logos can be displayed on the kayak by arrangement with Jerry. To offer backing for this endurance event, please contact Hilary Harvey, fund-raiser for Wales Air Ambulance in Pembrokeshire on (01834) 814567 or Jerry on 07969761178.
