Driven by a desire to support and raise awareness for an integral part of the community, Kassian Sheppard, from Lampeter Velfrey, is set to embark on a physical challenge on behalf of Wales Air Ambulance, the charity that provides a vital service through emergency air cover for those who face life-threatening illness or injuries.

"I'm delighted that Kassian is embarking on the Icelandic Lava Trek to raise money for Wales Air Ambulance," commented fundraising co-ordinator for South Wales, Ryan Phillips. "The things people do to raise money for us never fails to amaze me. I wish him every success with this tough, physically demanding challenge."

Kassian's challenge is to walk the Landmannalaugar route across the Southern Highlands of Iceland, one of the country's most active volcanic areas.

The trek itself takes place over three days and covers a total distance of 35 miles.

Although this challenge is located in one of the most picturesque and awe-inspiring landscapes in the world, and is relatively short in duration, the terrain is tough and the days are long, therefore this trek promises to be nothing short of a challenge.

The trek is organised by Charity Challenge, who were responsible for Comic Relief's Kilimanjaro trek in 2009.

Inspired by the natural beauty of West Wales, Kassian has developed a love for the outdoors and a yearning to explore the world in this way.

His training consists mainly of trekking along the local footpaths and beaches. He also continues to receive ongoing support from his local Kung Fu club, Wales Lau Gar (http://www.lau-gar.com">www.lau-gar.com), both in terms of his training and fundraising efforts.

He has set a minimum target of £2,000 (the average WAA mission costing £1,500) to be raised by May.
