A scheme to encourage young golfers out onto the fairways is taking off in Pembrokeshire.

Clubs across the county are teeing up with local schools to develop the Ryder Cup stars of the future.

An estimated 140 junior players have now taken up irons in the county over the past year.

At South Pembrokeshire Golf Club alone the number of junior members has risen from just two a year ago, to 66.

The scheme to drive up the number of juniors is the result of an initiative between Golf Development Wales and Sport Pembrokeshire - Pembrokeshire County Council's sports development arm.

Funding from Golf Development Wales has enabled the employment of a County Golf Development Officer, as well as the introduction of other initiatives such as taster sessions and coaching lessons.

"It's wonderful to see the game develop and heartening to see so many youngsters - both boys and girls take up the sport," said Alan Jones, sports development officer with responsibility for golf development and a member of South Pembrokeshire Golf Club in Pembroke Dock.

"If the game, like any sport, is to flourish then it needs to encourage junior development."

Alan, who is the current Dyfed champion, said that as a result of the initiative eight out of the 10 golf clubs in the county now ran links with local schools, with more than 600 pupils taking part in Tri Golf taster sessions.

"In addition to South Pembrokeshire - Priskilly and Rosemarket clubs have also set up new junior sections," he said.

The Pembrokeshire initiative is part of a wider scheme involving local authorities in Cardiff Anglesey and Gwyenedd.

Together these schemes are responsible for bringing 17,000 more 11-16-year-olds into the game.
