Pembrokeshire's young cricketers have been congratulated for their efforts at the crease this year.

Over 100 junior cricketers attended the annual Dragon Cricket Coaching Awards Presentation Evening at Haverfordwest Cricket Club on Friday, March 6.

The event was organised by the Pembrokeshire Association of Cricket Coaches, to mark the youngsters' development through the Dragon Cricket Coaching Awards scheme.

This year, more than 150 children took part in the scheme, which measures skills progression from Level 1 to Level 5.

Also presented with awards on the night were Andrew Salter, who plays for St. Ishmaels and who was captain of England's Under 15s last season. He won the 2008 Leslie Ellis Youth Batting Award.

Ceri Brace, who plays for Carew and Wales, won the Julia White Youth Bowling Award.

Seven winners of county youth caps were also honoured, including: Nathan Banner, Herbrandston; Stephen Inward, Llangwm; Jonathan Strawbridge, Fishguard; Iestyn Scourfield, Whitland; Phil Coburn, St. Ishmaels; Jonathan Thomas, Whitland and Josh Davies, Pembroke.

Matthew Freeman, cricket development officer for Sport Pembrokeshire - the sports development arm of Pembrokeshire County Council - said the Dragon Cricket Coaching Awards were a great way for youngsters to learn the basics of the sport.

"It's good to see that players continue to progress through the scheme and on to national honours," he said.
