With last Saturday morning looking decidedly showery, a small, but nicely manageable turnout meant that Ian and Mary were able to have a team event of boys against the girls in a Texas scramble over some seven holes.
With Mary keeping the score of the girls a close secret, the boys had to be at their level best to have a chance of winning.
The girls team of Sophie Lovall, the birthday girl, Meredith Davies and Georgias Williams and Thomas, scored all threes until the very last hole, which was longer than most of the others.
The boys team of Alex Heaven, Leo Davies and the Jacks Davies and Beynon, also scored threes, but crucially also scored a three on the last, and enough to win an enjoyable contest by one shot.
The second group concentrated on the fundamentals of putting, and after a practice session, a two-hole putting competition took place on the practice green. Some fine putting displays from David Webb, Matthew Adams and Oliver Worley were not quite enough to prevent Georgia Thomas from winning with two two putts on each hole - an excellent performance enabling her to get a choice of chocolate bar.
The next competition was a very long putt from one end of the green to the other and the benchmark was laid down by David Webb with a magnificent two. With another 12 players trying to match it, David looked on nervously, but fear not, nobody was able to match his two and David also had a choice of chocolate bar.
With the Wee Wonders competition taking place on Wednesday coming, Sunday was a chance for some of the entrants to have a practice on a 150-yard par three set up at Tenby. With the wind blowing into their faces, it felt more like 175 yards, but nonetheless, good performances came from Oliver Worley, Matthew Adams and Jack Guerrerio. Hopefully the wind won't be as strong on Wednesday! A big thank you must go to all the parents who assisted the youngsters on Sunday, much appreciated.
Practice will be tomorrow (Saturday) at the usual time of 9 am and 10 am, as this will give extra practice for those playing on Wednesday. There will be no golf the following Saturday, as it is the start of Open Week. However, this Sunday sees the May medal being played - start time is at 10.25 am.
On Wednesday, there is a bus going to Garnant Park in Ammanford. The bus will be leaving Tenby at 10.30 am, and with 20 young players on it, there will be room for about a dozen or so parents if you should so wish. Cost of the bus will be approx. £5 per head, and with the competition starting at 1 pm, there will be food available at Garnant. The bus is scheduled to return to Tenby at approx. 7-7.30 pm.
