AFTER 10 years working at the Cancer Research UK shop in Tenby, manager Julia King Thomas is stepping out from behind the till and retiring. Julia started as a volunteer at the store, before becoming assistant manager, and then shop manager in 2001.

Area manager Helen Evans was keen to mark Julia's dedication and commitment to the charity. "Julia has worked tirelessly for the last 10 years and she will be missed enormously," she said.  "Everyone at Cancer Research UK wishes her all the very best for the future.  "Her efforts have helped raise money to fund Cancer Research UK's vital work into preventing, diagnosing and treating different kinds of cancer. "In 2006/7 our shops contributed over £16 million to our vital research into cancer. "Our shops rely almost entirely on the generosity of their local communities, they generate a steady income and also a focal point for the charity on around 600 High Streets across the UK." Fellow staff and volunteers toasted Julia's retirement with a glass of bubbly and a slice of cake on Friday. Julia was also presented with a bouquet of flowers. Said Julia: "I would like to thank the wonderful and dedicated band of volunteers at the shop. "We have had a big celebration this year as the shop has raised £1 million since it opened around 15 years ago."
