Under excellent conditions and enjoying a cool, sunny late summers day Martletwy Young Farmers held their annual agricultural show at The Downs, Cresselly on Wednesday. On Friday of next week, August 31, the club have another highly significant fixture as they mark their diamond jubilee with a celebration dinner at the Nantyffin Motel, Llandissilio - past members and friends should contact Libby Henderson on 07815 046779. Due to an enforced reduction in livestock sections, the attendance at this week's show was down somewhat on previous years, but overall the event was judged to be a huge success. Everyone involved did their very best to ensure that 56th annual fixture would live up to expectations and entries were considered to be very good in all the horse and pony classes, the companion dog show and in the marquee. Taking supreme from the horse section winners was Sarah Whitfield with her outstanding five-year- old dapple grey heavyweight Hunter, Johnstown Diamond, ahead of Jessica John with Seren Tywyll - her 13-year-old bay Working Hunter Pony. Supreme judge Gerwyn James also fancied Sarah's 11-year-old coloured horse, Puzzle's Copycat, shown under saddle, Ruth Rees's three-year-old Hunter filly, Thora, shown in-hand, and the lead rein winner, Molly Anne Rees on her five-year-old black mare, Treowen Christina. Best in the dog section was given to Zina Saunders with her 30-month-old Boxer, Zulu, with Peter Jones's 23-month-old Whippet bitch, Medi, in reserve. Kelly Clark's 11-month-old Boxer, Barclay, was adjudged as best puppy. In the marquee, Les Thomas was awarded the trophy for gaining most points in the vegetable and flower classes and Katie Harries and Olivia Vanner shared the Millennium Trophy for the children's division. Officials: chairman - Wyn Jenkins; vice-chairman - Julian Nicholas; secretaries - Sue Morgan, Alison George, Diane Parry, Joyce James and Alan Newman; treasurers - Trevor Nicholas and Richard Mathias.
