Fly-tipping is an illegal and expensive problem which Keep Wales Tidy, in partnership with Pembrokeshire County Council, Environment Agency Wales and community groups, is trying to reduce.
All the partners are committed to combating fly- tipping in Pembrokeshire as part of the 'Pride in Our Communities' campaign. Simon Preddy, Pride In Our Communities officer, said: "We are fortunate to have an excellent quality environment in Pembrokeshire. However, we also recognise that fly tipping presents a real threat not just to the environment but also to the quality of people's lives and to business, especially tourism. "We are committed to working in partnership with others to build on the good work already underway in the county to ensure that we develop more sustainable ways of managing our wastes."
The aim of the project is to raise awareness of the problems of fly-tipping, encourage people to deal with waste sustainably, make it more difficult for fly-tippers to dump their waste, catch and prosecute those who fly-tip.
How can you help? Check that anybody who takes rubbish away for you is authorised to do so. If in doubt call Environment Agency Wales on 08708 506 506.
The partnership is looking for members of the community to get involved by letting it know where the problem areas are, assisting the partnership in clearing and enhancing fly-tipped areas, installing prevention measures and monitoring hotspots. Why join the project? As part of a group, you can develop your ideas for improving your local environment. You will receive all the support and advice you need to carry out your projects safely and successfully.
A project officer will provide advice and practical assistance and a small grant is available to pay for insurance, equipment (for example, gloves) refreshments, protective clothing, administration. Training is also available to volunteers on a range of issues.
