Ten young musicians, aged up to 18 years, competed for the Grant Llewellyn Challenge Shield at the Nantyffin Hotel, Llandissilio, recently. Each contestant had already won their local Rotary Club Young Musician Competition and were competing for the Zone One title, the winner of which will now go through to the district final, covering the whole of South and West Wales, which will be held in Brecon The judges, Leon Downey, John McGarry and John Biggs, congratulated all the talented competitors who enthralled the audience with excellent individual performances on piano, flute, euphonium, acoustic guitar, tenor horn and cornet. After much deliberation, the Grant Llewellyn Challenge Shield was awarded to Joel Rees, of Tenby, for his superb, accomplished and masterly display on the marimba and vibraphone. In second place was harpist Llywelyn Ifan Jones, of Aberaeron, while third prize was won by Katie Groves, Milford Haven, who played the saxophone. All contestants were presented with cash prizes by the assistant governor of Zone One, Tony Park CBE, of Cardigan. Rotarian Tony thanked all the competitors, teachers, parents, judges and the Rotary Clubs in Zone One for all the hard work. Special thanks were given to Rotarian Neil Jackson, of the Rotary Club of Narberth and Whitland, for organising the competition. The MC was Neil's club colleague, Rotarian Patrick Jones.
