A woman from Tenby who travelled to London this week for an operation to donate bone marrow is hoping that one day she will get to meet the recipient.
Thirty-three-year-old Jody Hurlow was contacted by the Anthony Nolan trust in May as a possible match for bone marrow, and after blood samples were taken she was confirmed as a match for the patient after a 12 week period.
Jody went to London at the start of August for a medical examination which included more blood samples, a chest X-ray and an ECG (heart monitor).
She passed the medical and went back to London on Tuesday to undertake the PBSC (peripheral blood stem cells) process, whoch took four hours.
As her veins were too small, they had to take the stem cells through her neck called a central line.
Four stem cells were needed and Jody managed to donate six, so it was a very good result.
Due to data protection the only information she knows about the patient is that it’s an adult male.
Jody is hoping that after the two-year period has passed, she’ll be able to meet the recipient.
“It was an emotional experience but I am extremely humbled to have been able to give someone a second chance of life and if I was called to donate again I would do so instantly,” said Jody.
