Sir,

I am writing to agree with the comments made by Dorothy Lindsay in last week's Letters page.

During the winter I walk a lot around Castle Hill which, along with most of the town, has taken on a very unkempt look, as if no-one cares for it anymore. I have lived in Tenby nearly 45 years and I have never seen it look so tatty.

So much money is spent on advertising our 'jewel in the crown' to encourage people to come here, but I am afraid the 'jewel' is looking very tarnished. So, Tenby is a naturally beautifully place with wonderful views, but it can't survive on its own without a helping hand and we can't keep taking from it without giving something back.

Tenby is a year round resort now, with many visitors coming for weekend breaks during the winter, and surely we need to be proud of our town and show it at its best. Have we got no pride in our surroundings anymore?

I have been to places like Bournemouth and Eastbourne and could never imagine their towns being allowed to get into the state ours has; in fact, they both look 'manicured', which you could never say about Tenby.

During the summer I work in the tourist industry and last season had many visitors telling me in the course of my work that they had been coming to Tenby many years for their holidays, but would not be returning because it had really gone downhill and they were disgusted with the state of the town, especially with regard to litter.

Before the main season starts couldn't there be a big offensive to clean Tenby up and show it to its best advantage. Even a good sweep around, a litter pick and deal with the weeds in the streets help. The longer we leave it, the worse it's going to get.
